Opportunity Mackenzie Health provides healthcare services to residents of Richmond Hill, Vaughan and surrounding communities from the Mackenzie Richmond Hill Hospital. Providing health care to one of the fastest growing communities in Canada, it will be necessary for Mackenzie Health to open a second hospital in order to keep up with demand for services. The new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital—the first hospital to be built in the Southwest York Region in more than 50 years— was one of five major projects the Government of Ontario made a significant financial commitment to in Budget 2013. Challenges Difficulties the local government had to overcome in order to meet the community need with or without the use of P3 (ex. High cost of financing) Innovations Highlight innovations that resulted from pairing with the private sector (better technology, time management etc.) Results The new Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital includes: A state-of-the-art emergency department; Modern surgical suites and operating rooms; Acute inpatient and intensive care beds; Birthing (obstetrics) and Pediatrics departments; Mental health care; York Region District Stroke Centre services; Technologically advanced diagnostic imaging; Single patient rooms for enhanced infection control and privacy; and A flexible design to permit adaptation over time as new thinking and best practices emerge. The project created over 1,000 construction jobs. Mackenzie Health added overall a total of 1,800 staff and 100 physicians upon opening. The hospital is conveniently located at the northwest corner of Jane and Major Mackenzie Drive and will be directly accessible to Highway 400 and the connecting 407 and 401 highways providing ease of access for patients arriving by ambulance or in their own vehicle.
