Macquarie Point Stadium

proposed

The proposed Macquarie Point stadium in Hobart is a large-scale stadium project that has faced strong reservations from the Tasmanian Planning Commission (TPC). The TPC criticized the stadium's size, location, and economic viability, describing it as a bulky monolith that disrupts Hobart's landscape and raises urban planning concerns such as public transport access and traffic congestion. The project cost estimates have escalated from $715 million to $1.13 billion, with public loans projected to reach $1 billion by construction end and $1.8 billion over a decade due to interest. Despite the TPC's recommendation against the project, the government has amended legislation to allow parliament to make the final decision, with funding pledged from various sources including the Tasmanian government, Commonwealth government, and AFL.
