Madagascar - Toliary Township Protection Project

The Toliary Township Protection Project is a priority due to the frequent threats of flooding in the city of Toliary. It should make it possible directly, at a lower cost, to protect at least inhabitable areas of 26,000 inhabitants and cultivable areas of 2,000 ha. The project should also promote job creation, the promotion of local SMEs and therefore the fight against poverty. The implementation of the project should also contribute to the rehabilitation of the environment through the reforestation of the river's watershed and soil conservation works over an area of 800 ha. The project includes the following components: (i) reinforcement and raising of 16,100 m of embankment dikes to protect the city of Toliary from the 100-year floods of the Fiherenana River, as well as the conservation of the soil of an 800-hectare area located in the downstream part of the delta; (ii) control and monitoring of the works and (iii) project audit.
