Description
Description | The Project aims to construct a state-of-the-art future fuels storage and refueling terminal which will be powered by renewable energy near the Port of Sines, Portugal. The infrastructure will include electrified storage tanks, loading arms and pipelines required to fuel large ships to use and transport future fuels like green hydrogen, ammonia and e-methanol. The Project aims to connect around 120MW of renewable energy to the terminal and assist decarbonising broader Port energy demand. The Project can help unlock a green shipping corridor between Portugal and Northern Europe, that is, a shipping route on which green fuels and biogenic CO2 will be transported and zero-carbon emissions ships are deployed. EU legislation, such as the FuelEU Maritime directive drives the demand for electrification and green fuels at ports. To achieve these legislative objectives, a renewable energy powered storage and refueling infrastructure is required at both export ports (in countries like Portugal with high quality renewables) to import ports (with significant energy demand in Northern Europe). The Project aims to be a template for developing this renewable energy powered export / import infrastructure of green fuels throughout Europe. The first step in developing the project is a feasibility study undertaking the initial engineering work and design of the renewable energy solution which will be supported by the EU Connecting Europe Facility Cross Border RES Preparatory Studies funding round and the lead project proponent Madoqua Renewables. Beyond the renewable generation required to power the future fuels terminal, the Project seeks to accelerate the deployment of renewables in Europe, unlocking large scale deployment of renewable generation to be transformed into green hydrogen, ammonia, e-methanol through providing the logistics infrastructure required to connect to storage facilities in location such as Rotterdam, Antwerp, Duisburg and other key Northern Europe energy import hubs. |
