Main road 9127 Ukonlampi–Vartius

The Ukonlampi–Vartius connecting road, which is often used by travellers going from Suomussalmi to the Vartius border crossing point, was in poor condition and was difficult to maintain under the spring road conditions. It was believed that if the road were to be paved, traffic volumes would be much more plentiful and the road would thereby support the vitality of the Suomussalmi Municipality centre and improve the possibility for co-operation between municipalities. The project included complete renovation and paving. The renovation included straightening out curves in the road, cutting through hills and strengthening the structural foundation of the road’s layers. 50 percent of the project funding was received from the European Regional Development fund and 50 percent from the Finnish Road Administration.
