Description
Description | The Maine Yankee nuclear power plant was located on the Bailey peninsula in Wiscasset, Maine, on an 820-acre lot. Construction began in 1968 and took nearly four years, costing over $200 million at the time (more than $2 billion today). The plant was licensed to operate for 40 years but closed after 24 years due to costly safety issues. The company spent nearly eight years and $500 million decommissioning the plant, including demolishing the largest containment building with explosives. Armed guards still protect the remaining nuclear waste on site without a clear disposal plan. |
