Description

Description

DuraMaïs aims to raise awareness among cross-border maize farmers of the importance of limiting runoff and erosion on sloping land. Limiting these phenomena also means reducing the transfer of active ingredients and fertilising elements to the water system (protection of surface water quality). A pilot project carried out between 2012 and 2017 in Wallonia allowed the development of a specific technique for erosion control in maize crops. This technique involves the creation of mounds and hollows between the rows of the crop. During heavy storms, water is stored in the hollows, which prevents runoff and the onset of erosion. Storing water throughout the plot also allows the crop to make better use of it. Demonstration plots will be set up in order to convince the farming community why it is in their interest to adopt more sustainable practices.
