Description

Description

The project aims to achieve 100% Maize self-sufficiency by 2025 through use of efficient production technologies & reduction of postharvest losses from the current 12% to 6% and will be implemented in Twenty-Seven (27) Major Maize producing Counties located in High and Medium Rainfall Areas (HMRA) in Kenya. Maize accounts for 65% of total cereals production in the EAC region. In Kenya, Maize accounts for as much as 85% of total cereal production. Maize is both a subsistence and commercial crop, grown on an estimated 2.2 million hectares by both large as well as small farmers. The average national production is currently at about twenty bags per hectare, but with appropriate interventions, yield could double, increasing the maize supply and price reduction for grain and flour. The population of Kenya is nearing fifty million people with an average per capita consumption of maize at 95 kg per person (KNBS). The LTA of maize production is forty million bags, while average annual food and other uses is about fifty-two million bags.
