Malawi - Blantyre water supply phase vii and sanitation master plan study

The project forms the Phase VII water supply development works for the Blantyre Water Board (BWB). Blantyre is the largest city in Malawi and was the country’s capital until 1975 when the seat of the Government was transferred to Lilongwe. Blantyre is however still the country’s industrial and commercial centre. A total of 18,000 m3/day will be provided by the project. This will bring the total average water production capacity to 78,000 m3/day, which will be able to meet City’s water demand up to the year 2000 when additional supply will again be required. After its implementation, BWB will therefore have adequate time to plan and execute the next phase of water supply development. The Sanitation Masterplan Study will involve studying the existing sanitation situation in Blantyre, projection of the need for the service and then preparation of a masterplan covering a 20 years period. The masterplan will show a staged programme for sanitation development in Blantyre for that period.
