Malawi - Karonga-Chitipa Road Project

The Karonga-Chitipa Road Project aims to improve rural road infrastructure development in Malawi. It should support the local economies of the Chitipa and Karonga districts by reducing the transportation cost of agricultural and industrial products of the region, and reducing travel time between the two district centers. The proposed road should improve transport services between Malawi and Zambia, and contribute towards the promotion of regional integration. The output of the project will be a two-lane 47.3-km bitumen surfaced road with 6.7-meter carriageway and 1.5-meter wide sealed shoulders on both sides, between Lifilya and Chitipa, as a section of the Karonga-Chitipa road. The project comprises the following components: (i) construction works for the upgrading of the existing gravel surfaced road to bitumen standard with 6.7-meter carriageway and 1.5-meter wide sealed shoulders on both sides for a total length of 47.3 km between Lifilya and Chitipa; (ii) consultancy services for supervision of construction works, and (iii) project audit services.
