Malawi - Lilongwe Forestry Project

The proposed project, which has a very high priority rating in the Government's development strategy, seeks to avert an imminent environmental crisis from the Indiscriminate felling of trees. It has several positive aspects including improved agricultural and forestry development and etablishment of sustainable fuel-energy source in an environmentally acceptable manner. The project will enhance increased crop yields, provide on-site fuelwood and livestock feed. It will also help to protect wildlife in the Thuma Forest Reserve. Furthermore, by setting up a multi-disciplinary team and providing staff training, the project will strengthen the Forestry Department’s structures in the Lilongwe District. The project could, also, be easily replicated. Other benefits include improved water supply and health services, better transport, marketing, distribution and trading as a result of the 10km access road which will be constructed, as well as higher incomes from increased sales of poles and maize.
