Malawi - Strengthening of Primary and Secondary Education

The proposed project is part of an overall programme designed to strengthen, expand and improve primary and secondary education. The project will support the Government’s effort to expand and strengthen primary and secondary education. It will alleviate problems of over-crowding by providing 20,000 new places and furnishing better conditions for teaching and learning. The institution building aspect of the project involving the construction of fifteen district education centres, the construction of teaching materials production unit at the Malawi Institute of Education, the financing of seminars and scolarships; the provision of radio sets; and the provision of technical assistance to the PIU will all improve the quality and relevance of education and ensure proper supply of adequately educated people for secondary and tertiary education. The emphasis on the construction component is a response to a major need pointed out by the sector assessment and will constitute a basis for improving the quality and equity of primary education.
