Description

Description

The objectives of the Electricity System Reinforcement and Access Expansion Project for Mali are to (i) improve power system reliability and efficiency, (ii) increase access to electricity in selected areas, and (iii) facilitate the integration of renewable energy. The project has four components. (1) Reinforcement of grid infrastructure and access expansion (US$284 million equivalent component will finance critical grid infrastructure and new connections. (2) Green mini-grid and off-grid electrification of selected localities in rural areas component will contribute to reducing disparity of access to electricity services between urban and rural areas and providing cleaner and more affordable electricity for socioeconomic development in rural areas. The proposed component aims to deploy technologies61 and new business models that would reduce fossil fuel use, save costs, tap into local renewable energy resources, and ensure more reliable service provision. (3) The Institutional Capacity Building and Implementation support component will finance activities to create a robust institutional arrangement to implement the proposed project and to support the energy sector’s overall development. (4) Contingent Emergency Response Component (CERC) component will contribute to an emergency response through the timely implementation of activities in response to an eligible national emergency.
