The Managua Water Supply Project for Nicaragua will assist in financing improvements to the water supply system and a major extension of the distribution system in the capital city of Managua. The project is needed to: 1) improve the reliability of water service; 2) extend service to a large segment of the urban population; 3) provide capacity for a rapidly growing city; and 4) provide a sound basis for economic expansion in the future. Its components are: 1) division of the distribution system into two service pressure zones; 2) meters to measure all pumpage; 3) new and improved chlorination facilities; 4) additional transmission mains; 5) improvements and extensions to the distribution system; 6) new distribution storage reservoirs; 7) house connections; 8) an improved meter repair shop; and 9) a study for the development of supplementary water sources. These new additions will provide an adequate, dependable, and safe water supply, at a reasonable cost, to the population of Nicaragua.
