Manaus Power Project

The Manaus Power Project is a 250-MW power project located in Manaus, Amazonas. The project developers were El Paso Energy International (now El Paso Corporation), Capex, Magtec Servicos Tecnicos, and International Marketing System. El Paso Energy International won this project in a international bidding called by Eletronorte, a Brazilian federal utility, in August 1997. Construction was scheduled on a fast track to help relieve frequent blackouts and power shortages in the area. Manaus power project was scheduled to be built in three phases. The first phase was a 44-MW unit due to come on-line and delivering electricity by mid-November, 1997. The remaining two phases were planned to be operational in early January 1998. The total project cost was estimated at US$100 million. Electricity from the plants was to be sold under a four year contract to Eletronorte with an option to extend the agreement another one to six years. In 2002 the investments in infrastructure in the Manaus Power Project amounted US$ 20.7 million (R$ 58.5 million)
