Description | The project envisages the expansion, rehabilitation and operation of the port with a total investment of US$ 1.8 billion over the next seven years. The sponsors will convert the present port into a container terminal. The port will have a capacity to handle 500,000 containers per year. In the first phase, the sponsors will invest US$ 200 million in two years. In the second phase, the docks will be expanded from 225 meters to 600 meters. The project is being undertaken by a joint-venture of Trans Dominicana de Desarrollo and the French company Balguerie. The 10-year concession contract can be renewed four times. The sponsors did not undertake the investment commitments, and by 2004 the project was transfered the port administration to Cementos Cibao. This company also failed to implement the port improvements. By 2011, another attempt to award the port operations failed, and as of May 2013 the Manzanillo port was under state administration.
