CMR Engineers and Project Managers Ltd. started running Matola coal terminal in Nov. 1993 under a 15-year lease agreement signed in the aftermath of the civil war in Mozambique. Matola had a capacity of handling up to 4 million tons per year, but throughput in 1993 was 200,000 tons. In 1994, thoughput reached 800,000 tons coal and coke. By 2003 coal throughput reached 1.33 million tons. CMR invested about US$ 4 million in the rehabilitation of handling equipment, but lacked the resources for further investments. In Feb. 1997, CMR sold the facility to African Portland Industrial Holdings, Namibia, owner of the dry bulk facility at Walvis Bay in Namibia, for an undisclosed sum. CFM, the Mozambique transport parastatal, holded 5% of the shares. The contract ended in 2003, when the state awarded a concession for most terminals of Maputo Port (3122). The Maputo Port Coal Terminal management contract continued to be active after 2003, but was no longer between the state and a private operator, it became a contract between two private entities.
