The company was created as a joint venture between the local telecom operator Martelecom and local companies in the region. The company started operations in January 1996 and had 650 subscribers by the end of 1997. The company provided services in Yoshkar-Ola, Volzhsk, Zvenigovo, and Kozmodemyansk. Luncent Technologies delivered the equipment. Mar Mobile held a GSM-license for the Republic of Mari El in the Volga part of Russia, with a population of 730 000. In August 2003 Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) acquired 100% of Mar Mobile from the US MCT Corp. From 2004 investment figures included in MTS. |
