Mauritania - Rural Hydraulics Project in South-Eastern Mauritania

The Rural Hydraulics Project in South-Eastern Mauritania represents the village component of the Mauritanian aspect of the second village and pastoral hydraulic CEAO programme. It relates to the Bank Group's continued support to the drinking water supply sector and more particularly to the rural water sub-sector. The project should make available to a population suffering from a significant water shortage, about 1.4 million cubic metres of drinking water per year through 220 new water points, making it possible to meet the needs of nearly 218,000 people. From a socio-economic point of view, the major impacts of the project should be reflected in the improvement of the general health status of the beneficiaries, the establishment of populations near the newly created water points, and on the development (around certain boreholes with sufficient flow) of small irrigated areas. The main components of the project are: (A) studies on the location of boreholes, control and supervision of works; (B) execution of drilling works; (C) supply and installation of hand pumps; (D) construction and equipment of motorized pumping stations; and (E) institutional support.
