Mauritania – Education System Development Support Project

The Education System Development Support Project is designed on the basis of the major imperatives of the educational system, namely the sub-systems of basic and secondary (lower cycle) education. It plans to build 250 classrooms spread across 35 schools and 10 colleges with 60 classrooms. The project also has a major socio-economic dimension. Indeed, it constitutes a vector of social justice insofar as measures have been taken to reduce regional, social and gender disparities in access to education and poverty reduction in the country. At the pedagogical level, in-service teacher training, provision of functional schools and colleges, capacity-building for the local production of textbooks, and skills development should make it possible to effectively consolidate the sector's achievements in democratizing basic and lower secondary education and improving the quality of the system. The project has four main components, namely: (i) consolidation of the reception capacity and improvement of the quality of basic and secondary education; (ii) strengthening of girls' schooling and women's literacy; (iii) strengthening of the MEN's capacities in terms of planning, management, pedagogical supervision, evaluation and production of pedagogical equipment; and (iv) support to the Project Management Structure.
