Description

Description

Mauritel was the state-owned operator in Mauritania, offering local and national fixed-line and mobile telephone services. Morocco's partially privatized Maroc Telecom finalised its US$48 million acquisition of a 54% stake in Mauritel in April 2001. The deal with Mauritania was Maroc Telecom's first cross-border investment. It was also the first foreign venture since Vivendi Universal bought a 35% stake in the Moroccan national telecom operator in December 2000. In May 2002, Maroc Telecom sold 20% of its 54% stake in the company to the local firm company Abdallahi Ould Noueigued (AON) for US$16 million, leaving the government of Mauritania with the largest stake in Mauritel (46%). The deal committed Maroc Telecom to further extend the mobile and fixed-line services throughout Mauritania, covering all its major towns within five years. The number of subscribers to Mauritel's mobile subsidiary Mauritel Mobiles reached 415,000 by 2005. In 2007, Maroc Telecom ceded part of its capital to the business' workforce, but it retained 51% of Mauritel's capital. 2011 investments: annual report Maroc Telecom not available yet (per June 2012). 2006 and 2007 Capex: Estimate based on Maroc Telecom Annual report: Capex local firm = Capex Mobile Total*(Local Mobile Connections/Total Mobile Connections) + Capex Fixed Total*(Local Fixed Connections/Total Fixed Connections)
