Description
Description | Mauritius Telecom (MT) was the incumbent supplier of telecommunication services in Mauritius, offering mobile and fixed-line, domestic and international service. It was established in 1992 following a merger between the Mauritius Telecommunication Services Ltd. and the Overseas Telecommunication Services Ltd. In 2001, France Telecom acquired a 40% stake in MT for US$261 million. The Mauritian government retained a 34.5% stake while the State Bank of Mauritius held 19%. The remaining 6.5% was held by the National Pension Fund. The government decided to bring MT's fixed-line monopoly to an end on 31 December 2002 - one year ahead of the original deadline - and had fully licensed the first operators to compete against the incumbent in the fixed-line segment. In June 2005, a new local fixed-line service provider, Mahanagar Telephone Ltd., began operations in competition with MT. MT's international network was linked via satellite and a submarine fibre optic cable which linked South Africa with Malaysia and India via Mauritius. Cellplus was MT's subsidiary provider for mobile services. As of end 2006, MT had some 350,000 fixed lines and about 480,000 mobile subscribers through Cellplus. http://www.mauritiustelecom.com Capex 2011 based on France Telecom Orange FY2011 financial results: parent capex * subscribers Orange country subsidiary / subscribers of total France Telecom (226.3m) Capex 2012: Ibid (231 million) |
