Description

Description

Village of Mayo’s freeze protection for their water storage and distribution includes a geoexchange system that has been in operation for approximately 30 years and is past the end of its service life. The geoexchange system comprises two deep wells and a plate heat exchanger. In the fall of 2020, one of the geoexchange wells failed and the Village has been relying upon one well for freeze protection. A temporary backup propane boiler system has been installed in case the remaining well fails; however, the geoexchange system saves the Village around $190,000 in fuel cost each year and displaces fossil fuel consumption. This project includes drilling two replacement geoexchange wells, decommissioning the old wells, piping the new wells into the water treatment plant, replacing the heat exchanger, completing associated electrical and SCADA upgrades, and partial replacement of discharge piping. Government of Yukon retained a consultant, Morrison Hershfield, to complete a conceptual design and cost estimate to inform this funding application.
