Description
Description | Ophelia is the debut film by Francesca Scalisi, after her international career in documentary. An original, visionary drama set in an apparently dystopic world, but entirely similar to our present. A suffocating heat, a total black-out: the protagonist can no longer stay locked in her hyper-connected flat, managing her work remotely. Her agency handles the bureaucracy for foreigners who choose to conduct assisted suicide on Swiss soil, where the law allows it. Her forced encounter with an elderly customer with great vitality will allow her to confront the choice of her sister, who has decided to die after many years in a coma. Indeed, the film investigates that unexplored territory that is loss experienced through brotherhood, which directly and indirectly involves many families with not even a term to define it. As Italian expatriates in Switzerland and France, the writers tell a story on the border, between Italy and Switzerland, and between their own biographies, yet universal. A story of poetry and love, exalting free will and the need to respect the choices of others, whatever they may be. The film can reach a wider audience than the niche of European auteur cinema, considering the hundreds of millions of people in the world who can have access to euthanasia, and far more those to whom this is still forbidden by law - as there is no unequivocal jurisdiction on such an ethical theme, not even in Europe. A quadrangular co-production spanning 4 countries of our continent - Italy, Switzerland, France, and Albania - with a specific endowment on the subject each. In addition to being a potential disruptive debut in the industry, Ophelia aims to be a new case of impact production, in which a cultural product can become a driver to support the claim of an entire community and rethink on an individual and social scale. The selection of the project within the EAVE Producers' Workshop 2023 guarantees its in-depth processing in the heart of European film production. |
