Description

Description

The action will build on the exceptional achievements of Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), a Europe-wide mechanism that aims to strengthen the enabling environment for diverse, pluralistic and independent media in EU Member States and Candidate Countries. This will be achieved by working with national stakeholders to bring media law and policy in line with EU values and by providing needs-driven, targeted assistance to journalists in distress. In addition, the project’s outreach efforts will seek to boost public support for high-quality independent journalism across Europe. As previously, MFRR’s monitoring work will sit at the heart of the implementation strategy. A dedicated team will identify, track and react to media freedom violations as well as attacks on or threats to journalists and media workers. Alerts will be published on a bespoke online platform, Mapping Media Freedom, and documented in biannual reports. Over the project lifecycle, the monitors’ findings will inform three advocacy campaigns focusing on Journalists’ Safety, Law and Litigation and Media Capture. The campaigns will explore ways of expediting media reform programmes at the national level and transposing EU directives or recommendations that are aimed at eliminating perceived barriers to media freedom. In addition, MFRR will continue to provide legal and practical support to journalists under threat, thereby enabling them to continue pursuing their professional activities. This support will include legal defence, emergency assistance, residencies and training programmes. The project will also mobilise a wide network of media freedom organisations that can facilitate collective action and deliver a coordinated response MFRR was launched in 2020 by a consortium comprising the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom, Article 19 Europe, the European Federation of Journalists, Free Press Unlimited, the International Press Institute and the Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa.
