Description
Description | Independent media that serve the public interest require resilient editorial, business and operational models to fulfill their watchdog role in promoting transparency and strengthening institutions in democracies in Europe. Despite significant obstacles, especially in countries with greater political risks and market pressures, newsrooms can work towards and maintain independence through the practice and process of media innovation, audience centricity and revenue diversification. Emerging tools, revenue opportunities, a commitment to audience feedback loops are opportunities for media to achieve sustainability in the service of media pluralism and journalistic quality across Europe. The obstacles are especially urgent in media markets where citizens live news deserts, face a dearth of plural media sources, especially local and community focused media, and where the economic viability of journalism is at risk. In response, the Media Innovation Europe (MIE) consortium delivers media innovation training, coaching, funding and access to networks to preserve and develop journalism to fulfil its vital role as the fourth estate and contribute to upholding shared democratic values across Europe. The programme delivers integrated series of activities that tackle these challenges, including accelerators, peer-to-peer mentorship, networks for community building, and grants and tools for audience-centric journalism. MIE activities include unique offers like innovation hackathons and Europe-wide networking events for media innovators designed to share knowledge and foster collaboration. By pooling the expertise of four media support organizations with multiple decades of experience building networks, designing support structures and innovation programs for independent media in Europe, this project aims to unlock opportunities for innovation in independent media to navigate digital disruption, engage their communities, and achieve financial sustainability. |
