The team was tasked with enlarging the existing building form the 1960’s to allow for the additional Mechanical and Electrical systems required to support the new Hospital expansion. To reduce building construction costs, the expansion area was limited and therefore large areas of the existing space were used for the new equipment. This added significantly to the complexities of the project as the new systems had to be brought in sequentially as the old systems were removed and space was freed up. The project schedule and seasonality works added another layer of complexity in that the new chillers and cooling towers were scheduled to be completed midway through the project, however had to be completed prior to the end of the winter season. Because the work was taking place in one of Canada’s warmest cities, the team was required to compress the project schedule. The existing chilled water system and primary electrical distribution were demolished and the new chilled water system and primary/secondary electrical distribution systems were completed. A crew that specializes in dealing with high voltage power was required to complete the high voltage splicing connecting the old systems with the new electrical distribution. It was crucial that this task be completed properly as the lives of the patients in the hospital depended on it. To meet these tight timelines, a detailed, task-by-task schedule was created at the start of the project. The weekly review of this schedule allowed the team to review progress and apply extra resources to maintain schedule.
