China has begun constructing a mega hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the Nyingchi region of south-eastern Tibet. The hydropower dam is said to be the world’s largest such project and will generate 60,000 MW of power. The project was approved by Beijing in 2023 and the construction commencement ceremony was attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
