The project involves construction of a balancing reservoir across river Cauvery in Mekedatu, Karnataka, with the objectives of meeting Bengaluru's drinking water needs and generating hydroelectric power. The Karnataka government is proceeding with the project despite opposition from Tamil Nadu, which has filed a review petition before the Supreme Court and submitted a detailed plea to the Central Water Commission stating the project will be detrimental to its interests.
