Melfort and District Curling Club - Rink Roof Retrofit & Ice Plant Replacement

Sector: Hydrogen • Location: Saskatchewan, Canada

Source: Infrastructure Canada

Project
Completed

The project has two main objectives: 1) replace the ice plant - ammonia chiller, compressor, motor, and related piping that are 20-30 years past their expected lifespan with a new higher energy efficient ice plant, and 2) retrofit 5,000 sq ft flat roof of the facility that was built in 1972. Upgrading the ice plant will provide an anticipated 10-12% reduction in energy needs for plant operations.

Description

Description

The project has two main objectives: 1) replace the ice plant - ammonia chiller, compressor, motor, and related piping that are 20-30 years past their expected lifespan with a new higher energy efficient ice plant, and 2) retrofit 5,000 sq ft flat roof of the facility that was built in 1972. Upgrading the ice plant will provide an anticipated 10-12% reduction in energy needs for plant operations. The roof retrofit will increase the insulation value 6-fold from R5 to R30 and reduce heating needs by 14%. The ice plant room will have an ammonia detector installed to bring the room up to existing provincial safety codes. The expected outcomes of the project will increase the quality of the rink’s infrastructure, improve its energy efficiency, and enhance safety of our staff, volunteers and users.
