Description

Description

The state and federal governments will invest a total of $152.7 million to prepare Melbourne’s Melton Line for electrification. The funding covers planning approvals, site investigations, securing power supply for the future electrified line, environmental assessments, detailed design, and costing with delivery partners. Stage 1 works for Melbourne Airport Rail are creating space at Sunshine for the electrified track, and additional stabling capacity for metropolitan trains is being constructed at Cobblebank. Works on the Melton Line Upgrade are progressing to enable nine-car VLocity trains by next year, increasing passenger capacity by 50% ahead of future electrification. Electrification will allow faster, metro-style electric trains to run along the corridor, enabling redeployment of the regional VLocity fleet to other high-demand lines. Development works are expected to begin in 2026, with a target completion of mid-2027.
