Meta Platforms plans to build a 1-gigawatt hyperscale AI data center in Sturgeon County, Alberta, Canada. This will be Meta's 33rd data center globally and the largest outside the United States. The project involves an investment of 13 billion Canadian dollars and aims to begin commercial operations around 2031, coinciding with the start of a new natural gas-fired power plant supplying electricity to the facility. The data center will use advanced cooling technologies to reduce water consumption and will source electricity through a long-term power purchase agreement with Pembina Pipeline.
