Meta is building a $10 billion AI data center named Hyperion in Richland Parish, Louisiana. The data center will cover 2,250 acres of former state-owned farmland and is designed to power Meta's Llama AI models. The project received a $3.3 billion tax break exempting it from state and local sales and use taxes on data center equipment for 20 years. Meta has pledged $200 million in local infrastructure improvements, $1 million annually to Entergy's low-income ratepayer support program, and 1,500 megawatts of renewable energy in partnership with the utility. The data center could consume close to 20% of Louisiana's total electricity, prompting concerns about energy costs and infrastructure.
