Description
Description | New York City's Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn is a detention facility with a history of housing high-profile inmates. The facility has faced longstanding complaints about violence, overcrowding, poor food quality, cleanliness, safety, and staffing shortages since its opening in the 1990s. It is currently the only detention facility in New York City since the closure of the Manhattan Correctional Center in 2021. The Bureau of Prisons acknowledges aging infrastructure and staffing challenges but denies deliberate inhumane conditions. Following an investigation, officials promised to add more staff and addressed over 700 maintenance requests. |
