Description

Description

Mexico is undertaking a major rail infrastructure expansion including 3,400 km of new railway nationwide with a focus on passenger rail routes and modernization of freight rail operations. The Regulatory Agency for Railway Transport (ARTF) has issued new safety guidelines to standardize construction practices near active freight railways, ensuring worker and operational safety. The government allocated MX$157 billion (US$7.6 billion) for 2025 to support construction of 774 km of new passenger rail, 70 km of cargo rail for the Mayan Train, and 170 km for the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT). A new legal framework centralizes railway planning and operations under the Agency for Trains and Integrated Public Transport (ATTRAPI).
