Description

Description

CMS Energy Corporation is experiencing significant growth in data center load in Michigan, with a pipeline of over 9 gigawatts of qualified large-load projects, including at least two hyperscaler data centers in advanced negotiations. These projects are not yet included in the current five-year customer investment plan. Each gigawatt of new large load could generate $2 billion to $5 billion of incremental capital investment opportunity, depending on resource mix and necessary infrastructure. The company is investing heavily in the electric grid to improve reliability and resiliency, and is working through permitting and zoning processes in several Michigan townships. The timeline for these projects is expected to start materializing around 2028, with ramp-up through 2029-2030 and beyond.
