Description

Microsoft and MediaTek have developed a new active optical cable using MicroLED technology to reduce power consumption for short-haul connections in AI data centers by approximately 50%. The design uses imaging fiber originally developed for medical endoscopy and transmits data via hundreds of slower channels instead of a few high-speed ones. The hardware has been miniaturized to a thumb-sized transceiver compatible with existing data-center equipment. The companies aim for commercial rollout by late 2027.
