Microsoft and Abu Dhabi-based G42 planned a $1 billion geothermal-powered data center in Olkaria, Kenya, to support a new Microsoft Azure cloud region for East Africa. The project aims to be a clean-energy cloud infrastructure asset hosting AI infrastructure in Africa. However, the project has stalled due to power capacity constraints and the Kenyan government's inability to guarantee payment for a certain amount of computing capacity annually. The full-scale facility could require about 1 gigawatt of electricity, which is a significant portion of Kenya's national grid capacity.
