The Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion was a coastal restoration project in Louisiana designed to build and sustain up to 27 square miles of land by 2050. It aimed to strengthen the buffer between the greater New Orleans region and the Gulf of Mexico by harnessing sediment from the Mississippi River to rebuild land and combat sea level rise. The project was roughly estimated to cost $3 billion and was considered the only long-term solution capable of withstanding climate change. However, it was canceled less than two years after breaking ground due to increasing costs, ongoing litigation, and permitting concerns.
