Migration Challenges from Eastern Mediterranean: EU Policies and New Responses

The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence proposes a new balanced European Migration Governance Programme, following the introduction of the EU 2020 Pact on Migration and Asylum. This new proposal builds on previous experience, Greece’s new migration policy and follows a balanced two-dimensional approach, addressing border management as well as internal and external dimensions of migration policies. Migration, a significant on-going complex issue, has become one of the most EU crucial political subjects, with impact amongst Member States while raised ambiguity regarding EU’s institutional character and capacity to act. More specifically, the proposed programme, in view of these changes and based on direct feedback from hundreds migration operators, aims to expand the study of the aspects of migration in depth and breadth. Following an inter-disciplinary, institutional and intergovernmental approach, and in terms of increasing project visibility, renowned professors and experts have been selected as well as EPLO (an international organization, with expertise on migration and asylum issues) which will provide 3 high-quality annual seminars and related events to students in the host and other university institutions: (i)The EU Policies Towards Migration from Eastern Mediterranean; (ii) EU Refugee and Asylum Law & Policy; (iii) EU’s External Borders: Management and Operational aspects. In addition, 3 annual debate and research-oriented workshops will be offered, dealing in depth with issues of a) Contemporary immigration to the EU: Greece; b) Management of the EU’s external sea borders in the Aegean: EU and National level (case study); and c) Enhance Management of Migratory flows at Borders. The Centre expands its key-force network with other Research Centres, EU Institutions, NGOs, Civil Society, Regional & Local Authorities and Educational Institutions operationally engaged with EU migration, refugees, border management and asylum services.
