Migration, Security and Intelligence in the European Union

Migration has become one of the most salient political issues in Europe in recent years. Eurobarometer surveys have repeatedly shown that, since 2015, immigration has been considered by the public to be by far the most important issue facing the EU and national governments. Migration is also regularly at the heart of electoral campaigns across Europe, where anti-immigrant parties have overall been on the rise in recent years. Against this background, this project has the following objectives: (1) to implement a range of teaching activities (including the delivery of course modules and of a summer school on the EU asylum and migration policies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels) and research activities, complemented by various events, which address one of the most topical and sensitive issues in the European Union, namely asylum and migration, including their possible linkages with security and the increasing development of migration intelligence in the EU; (2) to foster dialogue between academic researchers and lecturers and society through the production and dissemination of a wide range of materials on the EU asylum and migration policies, including scientific publications, policy briefs, blog posts and podcasts, as well as the organisation of various events, including a public lecture, webinars, seminars and workshops; (3) to generate knowledge and novel insights that can support EU policy-making and strengthen the role of the EU in a globalised world, especially in relation to asylum, migration, security and intelligence matters; and (4) to conduct active outreach and educational work through the organisation of a lectures for the general public and the publication of materials on the EU asylum and migration policies through in non-scientific formats, such as blog posts and podcasts, which will spread knowledge about EU subjects to wider society and will bring the EU closer to the public.
