Description

Description

Opportunity Over the next 10 years, Metro Vancouver is expected to grow by one million residents. In June 2014, the Metro Vancouver Mayor’s Council on Regional Transportation shared a 10-Year Transportation vision outlining transit and transportation investments. This Vision includes extending the existing Millennium Line SkyTrain service, which operates between Commercial Driver and the University of British Columbia. The line would be extended from the current terminus at VCC-Clark to a new station at Arbutus. The Millennium Line Broadway Extension will be a direct extension of the existing Millennium Line. Continuing from VCC–Clark Station on an elevated guideway for 800 meters, the extension will then travel approximately 5.7 km beneath Broadway. The project includes 6 new stations, ending at Arbutus Street. A future phase of investment will connect rapid transit all the way to UBC’s Point Grey campus. The project will be delivered under the Community Benefits Agreement announced by the provincial government last summer. The agreement generates benefits to the surrounding community by providing opportunities for local workers, Indigenous peoples, apprentices and other groups. The Transportation Investment Corporation (TI Corp.) is delivering the project on behalf of the Province. TI Corp. is a Crown corporation with the legislative authority to deliver major transportation projects, similar to its role on the Port Mann Bridge project. With tolls now removed on the Port Mann Bridge, TI Corp. will provide oversight and management of the delivery of other major projects throughout the province. Project will cost $2.83 billion, funded and delivered by Government of BC, Canada and City of Vacouver.  Quotes: François-Philippe Champagne, federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities — “It’s great to see this important project getting under way in the heart of Vancouver. The Broadway Subway project will introduce a new transportation option along one of the city’s busiest corridors, helping reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, while keeping pace with the city’s growing ridership.” Claire Trevena, B.C.'s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure — “I’m very pleased the procurement phase for the Broadway Subway is being launched with our partners today. This is a solid step towards reducing congestion in the City of Vancouver and providing people with an alternative when it comes to transportation.” Kennedy Stewart, mayor, City of Vancouver — “I’m excited that following years of planning, regional prioritizing and funding discussions, we have the green light to start construction on the Arbutus portion of the Broadway Subway. The Broadway Subway is not only Vancouver’s number one transportation priority but an infrastructure investment that helps improve the entire region’s transportation future.” Kevin Desmond, CEO, TransLink — “Extending SkyTrain to Arbutus is a key component of delivering on the mayors’ vision, keeping our region connected and ensuring frequent, reliable transit service for our customers well into the future. It’s exciting to see this early work starting in support of our shared goal of keeping buses, people and goods moving during construction of the Broadway Subway project.” Learn More: To learn more about the project, visit: https://engage.gov.bc.ca/broadwaysubway/
