Minoru Place Activity Centre Conversion to Arts Centre

The project is to renovate an approximately 16,000 square foot building into a community arts space. The renovation of a former seniors centre building into a Community Arts facility will create purpose-built space for the current Richmond Cultural Centre including dance studios and art studios. The building is no longer required as a seniors activity centre (which has moved into the new Centre for Active Living) resulting in available infrastructure for alternative community needs. The adjacent Cultural Centre which is home to 11 community arts organizations, is strapped for space and needs to expand. Since the Cultural Centre building was opened in 1993 there has been no major capital investment for additional arts facilities despite a 70% increase in population. This has brought an increased need for arts programs and spaces for cultural activities and the existing opportunities have long waitlists. The renovation of the unused building will provide the necessary space to allow the expansion of arts programming in the City. The project works will include: - interior demolition; - construction of two dance studios with ancillary spaces; - construction of a pottery studio; - construction of a media arts studio; - construction of multipurpose program rooms; - construction of a flexible reception and lobby area; - HVAC modifications; plumbing & drainage and electrical modifications; and, - related works.
