Changing seawater into “blue gold”The Mirfa Independent Water and Power Plant was designed to generate 1,600㎿ of electricity, with a seawater desalination capacity of 238,000t per day. The United Arab Emirates has made all-out efforts to develop low-cost, high-effective water treatment technology since 2009 when the country classified highly valuable water resources, or so-called blue gold, as a next generation growth engine.The project was finished in 2017, the new plant is account for 10 percent of Abu Dhabi’s power generation and 10 percent of drinking water supply. The desalinated water is utilized to create a green area and help transform Abu Dhabi, the country’s capital, into a “water hub.” The water is also be used to afforest the desert area. Hyundai E&C received the order worth about 990.00 million dollars from Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority(ADWEA), jointly with Hyundai Engineering and Italia’s Ansaldo.The Mirfa project is all the more meaningful in that our efforts are expected to bear good fruit in the water industry which we have relentlessly worked hard on as one of four sustainable management areas since 2009. The project uses reverse osmosis, marking the first RO technology implemented by Hyundai E&C for water treatment.Seeing crisis as an opportunityThe Mirfa project aimed to build both a gas-fired power plant and a desalination facility at the same time, which is unprecedented in the power generation market. On top of this, we had to repair and improve four units of gas turbines left unused for the past decade.To meet the construction schedule despite the unfavorable conditions, we provided a temporary accommodation as well as the camp for workers in order to operate and manage the construction site around the clock.Amid poor weather conditions such as heat wave above 50 degrees Celsius and strong sandstorms, the Mirfa construction site could curtail the construction period at once by developing its own system.Safety-related employees train outsourced workers from all over the world with materials written in different languages every morning. Hyundai E&C thoroughly complied with the well-planned safety penalty and reward system to make Hyundai E&C's safety culture take root. As a result, the construction site achieved 20 million hours of zero accident last month.The Mirfa combined cycle power desalination plant project broke through a lot of difficulties. And now it is providing a new model in the Middle East.
