Guardia di Finanza (GdF) is the economic and financial police corps established by Italian law (Decree 68/2001) to protect the financial interests of the State and the European Union. The project M.A.F.M.O. aims at the purchase of high-tech equipment (10 Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer installed on dedicated cars or vans, with a training courses to enable staff to operate) with the final purpose to reinforce the investigative capability and capacity to use inverstigation and surveillance means for the fight against irregularities, fraud and corruption detrimental to the Eu financial interest. In detail, purchasing tools would make possible to identify - quickly - the quality of products transported and, therefore, to avoid the irregular release of fuels using prices significantly lower than market prices (as happens, for example, when lubricating oils is used for carburation). In this way, the action taken by the GdF on the main transit routes would be more effective, with a consequent increase in efficiency in terms of identifying fraud schemes and intercepting illegal activities, improving the activities of the Corps against criminal organizations active in the specific sector in order to prevent huge losses for the national and Union budget.
