Modern Greek literature—with very few exceptions—is hardly known to readers beyond the country's borders. In this context, the MGC 2027 project consists of the translation, promotion and distribution of 10 important works of Modern Greek literature, as a continuation of Aiora Press’ ongoing Modern Greek Classics series, which highlights the best of Greek literary production through award-winning translations into several European languages. The works included form a collection that spans 150 years, highlighting novels, short stories and poetry of high literary value—a tour of different forms, writers and periods of Greek literature. Of the 10 books in this project, 4 will be translated into English (SUIT IN THE EARTH by Ioanna Karistiani, A MONSTROUS MASTERPIECE by Yannis Ritsos, COLONEL LIAPKIN by M. Karagatsis and THREE VOICES IN THE DARK by Napoleon Lapathiotis), 3 into French (SERENITY by Ilias Venezis, TWO-FACED MONOLOGUES OF LONELINESS by Katerina Angelaki-Rooke and THE BOUNTY by Demosthenes Voutyras) and 3 into Italian (THE DAM by Spyros Plaskovitis, THE NOTARY by Alexandros Rizos Rangavis and TWO-FACED MONOLOGUES OF LONELINESS by Katerina Angelaki-Rooke). The translators include René Bouchet, Jeanne Roques-Tesson, David Connolly, Patricia Barbeito, John Kittmer, Alexander Zaphiriou, Maria Caracausi and Maurizio De Rosa. The project aims to raise the profile of the translators. All books will be published in both print and ebook formats. Promotion will include a digital campaign alongside traditional media, in addition to participation in book fairs and literary festivals, as well as the organization of launch events across Europe, a series of podcasts and the exhibition Art on the Cover: Greek Literature in dialogue with Art.
