Description

The renovated state-of-the-art modern slaughterhouse at Kunnukuzhy is a major milestone in Thiruvananthapuram's public health infrastructure. Constructed at a cost of Rs 15 crore, it is equipped with modern amenities to ensure high standards of hygiene and efficiency in meat processing. The facility can handle slaughter of up to 75 large animals and 50 small animals per day, includes rendering plant, cold storage, automated animal movement systems, livestock holding pens, emergency DG power, water reservoirs, refrigeration for meat sales, effluent treatment plant with 50 kilolitres per day capacity, and a biogas unit processing 2,000kg of waste daily. It aims to improve public hygiene, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability, replacing an older facility with poor maintenance and sanitation. The abattoir was built by Kerala Electrical & Allied Engineering Company Ltd and underwent trial runs in June. The city corporation floated an e-tender for a 10-year operation and maintenance contract to professionalise meat processing and regulate illegal slaughterhouses.
