Description
Description | This project involves the modernization and expansion of the Karaganda Combined Heat and Power Plant 3 (CHPP-3), located in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. The project includes increasing the plant’s generation capacity by 140 MW of electricity and 180 Gcal/hour of heat to address energy shortages in the Karaganda region and support the city’s growing demand for electricity and district heating. The expansion is also expected to improve heat distribution, supplying over 400 additional homes and social institutions with reliable energy. The sponsor for this initiative is Karaganda Energotsentr, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kazakhstan Utility Systems. The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) provided $240 million in long-term financing over 13 years to fund the project’s modernization and expansion. Some of the upgrades include dust filtration systems installation and significant reductions in nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon oxide emissions, resulting in a substantial decrease in the plant’s environmental impact. Financial close is achieved on December 24, 2024. https://eabr.org/en/press/news/the-edb-provides-long-term-financing-for-karaganda-energotsentr-to-construct-a-power-unit-at-chpp-3-/ |
