Modernisation of railway line Žilina - Košice, section Spišská Nová Ves - Spišské Tomášovce

The project addresses the upgrade of a 4.9 km double-track railway section between Spišská Nová Ves and Spišské Tomášovce, part of the railway line Žilina - Košice - Čierna nad Tisou - SK/UA, situated on the Rhine – Danube European Transport Corridor. It includes the reconstruction of the safety and security infrastructure at the railway station Poprad-Tatry. The project is part of the Global Project “Modernization of the railway line Žilina - Košice - Čierna nad Tisou - SK/UA”, which aims to increase the capacity, safety and travel speed of the railway line, enhancing regional connectivity and economic development, as well as the attractiveness of rail transport. The technical parameters of the new railway section will be in compliance with the relevant standards for the rail Core Network. These include in particular: - maximum speed up to 160 km/h - UIC GC clearance - axle load of 22.5 t/axle (Cat. UIC D4) - electrification (3 kV DC system, with the possibility of later rearrangement to the 25 kV AC system) - running of 750 m long trains The project covers the following main construction works: - upgrade of the substructure and superstructure along the 4.9 km railway section Spišská Nová Ves (outside) – switching station Spišské Tomášovce, including necessary changes to alignment, - installation of new overhead catenary and energy supply equipment, - removal of level crossings, construction of new railway bridges, retaining walls and noise barriers, - upgrade of the switching Station Spišské Tomášovce, - upgrade of Smižany stop, including underpasses, - reconstruction of the affected road infrastructure, including 2 new roundabouts, - reconstruction of existing Poprad – Tatry railway station building in order to adapt it to host the future Traffic Management Centre Poprad.
