Description
Description | The project aims to enhance one of the digital backbone networks through ground infrastructure supporting GO PLC’s GO1 submarine cable, which is the longest and fastest submarine optical fiber that connects St Paul’s Bay in Malta to Mazara del Vallo in Sicily, and the rest of Europe. This infrastructure strengthens Malta's position as a preferred data gateway in the region, facilitating improved connectivity and data transmission capabilities. The GO1 cable consists of a submerged plant and submarine cable infrastructure and has a lifespan of 25 to 30 years and possibly beyond. Works will upgrade the submarine cable infrastructure by replacing the existing equipment with EU-compliant infrastructure. Activities include the tender process to select a supplier. The GO1 submarine cable is an unrepeated system, meaning it operates without submerged repeaters. This project involves the replacement of the terminal active equipment to modernize the infrastructure and maintain service quality. As part of this project there are no changes to the submerged passive cable. The upgrade of the GO1 cable will benefit both Malta and Sicily by enhancing their digital global gateways, ensuring more reliable and faster data transmission between the two countries. This improved connectivity will support the growing demand for high-speed internet and data services, essential for economic growth and socio-economic development. Additionally, the use of EU-compliant equipment will enhance cybersecurity, protecting the integrity and confidentiality of data transmitted through the cable. |
